Fitting and Turning
PROSPECTS
The Fitting and Turning occupation equips Namibian trainees with the skills needed to take up positions as qualified artisans within the mining, engineering, building and civil industries.
The Namibian Institute of Mining and Technology provides a holistic method of training that integrates practical hands on training with theoretical knowledge and background, shaping individuals into experienced, knowledgeable, well qualified, capable recruits geared to enter the commercial and industrial job market.
The Fitting and Turning trade will teach the trainee to completely;
Examine and test machinery and equipment for faults.
Understanding the basics of hydraulics, pneumatics and pumps.
Dismantle equipment completely or partly to remove damaged and worn out parts.
Study drawings and instructions for necessary detail to determine vital functions and measurements.
Braze and weld joints and fractures, tempering and hardening metal parts, providing the necessary finish to manufactured items.
Operating lathes, milling machines and assembling gear boxes.
FULLTIME TRAINEES
NIMT offers a four-year training opportunity in the Fitting and Turning trade. Training is based on the apprenticeship modular training approach in accordance with the requirements and recommendations of the industry.
Theoretical tuition in the classrooms follows a combination of Level 1 (1st year) to Level 3 (3rd year) subjects.
During the second semester of every training year, trainees are placed at reputable companies nation-wide on job-attachment, thus providing them with the necessary job exposure.

MINIMUM ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
The NSSCO qualifications (revised curriculum)
Twenty (20) points in six (6) subjects;
F grade in English, Mathematics and Science;
Physics is compulsory for technical subjects.
OR
The NSSCO qualifications (revised curriculum)
Eighteen (18) points in six (6) subjects;
F grade in English, Mathematics and Science;
D grade in the respective Pre-vocational subject.
Please note:
Preference will be given to students with higher grades.
Must be declared healthy and fit by a medical practitioner.
SPECIAL TRAINING
This is a 6 month Vocational Modular Training route, which starts at the beginning of a semester and will end at the end of the semester.
This training possibility does not have any theoretical tuition.
MINIMUM ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
At least 16 years of age.
Early school leavers with 20 points in Grade 10.
SKILLS UPGRADING
Level 1 = 6 weeks
Level 2 = 7 weeks
Level 3 = 9 weeks
Trade Test Preparation = 8 weeks
MINIMUM ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Trainee has to undergo an evaluation test with the NIMT to establish trainability/recognition of prior to learning.
Trainee must be English literate.
Minimum of three years uninterrupted job experience. Copy of "Service Record" is a prerequisite and therefore must must be handed to the Registrar when the trainee registers for the evaluation test.
Minimum Grade 6 with a pass in Mathematics, Physical Science and English.
Must be employed to enable the trainee to complete/practice the prescribed tasks before entering for the Level.
